The Georgia Writer’s Association presents a series of writer’s workshops the second Saturday of each month. For a complete schedule, click to view the dates and topics of each planned meeting.

Please pass this information along to anyone you know who might be interested in joining a community of Georgia writers. The cost for the workshops is $10 for members, $5 for students, and $20 for the non-member public. On-line registration for workshops can be found at the following link.

Digitize-wise: Classroom Technology Workshops

Letizia Guglielmo has industriously gathered and organized some helpful technology workshops, which she emailed to everyone Wednesday, January 5. However, for the convenience of freeing up precious space in your email boxes, the information is posted here for later reference.

Dr. Guglielmo suggests that “as you continue preparing your syllabi and course activities for the semester, [use] the wealth of technology resources we have available in the department and college.” She reports that a series of useful technology workshops are scheduled in order to help you plan for your face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses and your professional work. Below is a list of workshops and further resources available to you through the university. They are listed in the following categories: Equipment and Digital Tools, English Department Workshops, CHSS “Brown Bags,” KSU technology workshops, and ITS Outreach learning seminars.

Equipment and Digital Tools
Camcorders and tripods, Digital Voice Recorders, Headsets with mics (enough for student use in the classroom), External Hard Drives for backing up projects and transferring work from the classroom to your office computer, Digital Cameras, as well as Laptops and Projectors. Please see Rhonda or a student assistant for details.

Additional digital tools are also available in the Dean’s Office including:
iPads, Flipcameras, additional Headphones with mics, Podcasters, Webcameras, and Flash Drives preloaded with hundreds of Power Point Templates and Images for your use. You may contact Nikki Hill (rhill23@kennesaw.edu), our CHSS Administrative Specialist for Online Services, for more information or simply drop by the Dean’s suite to sign out equipment.

Tired of the same flat Power Point slides? Looking for a way to enhance your next conference presentation or classroom lecture? In this hands-on workshop participants will learn the basics of Prezi presentation software and create their own “eye-popping” and “astonishing” presentations to be used in the classroom and/or in professional work.

Raise the Quality Class Writing: Introduce Students to KSU Writing Center!

As you prepare for classes to begin, the KSU Writing Center suggests that the task of grading student writing might be a enhanced if you’ll urge your students to use its services.

Taking one or both of the following simple steps makes your students more likely to visit the KSU Writing Center; as a result, you’re more likely to read better student writing.

1) Schedule a brief Writing Center “Outreach” for each of your classes. Simply email your course name/number and desired date, time, and length of visit to writingcenter@kennesaw.edu.

2) Include the following information on all syllabi:

The KSU Writing Center is a free service offered to all KSU students. Experienced, friendly writing assistants work with you throughout the writing process on topic development, revision, research, documentation, grammar, and more. Vista & Syllabi/Policy Statement Workshop

Greetings and Happy 2011!!

It is time to send an e-copy of your Spring 2011 syllabi to Rhonda Nemeth . However, before you do, you should attend a departmental syllabi and policy statement development workshop that is scheduled for this Thursday, January 6, at 3 p.m. in EB 235.

Letizia Guglielmo will present an overview of Vista and provide technical resources to assist you with using technology in your course planning (30 minutes). Laura Davis will discuss some of the university’s new policies surrounding syllabi development, which both the chair and dean have asked everyone to follow. Bring your laptop, if you wish, and be prepared to post your syllabi and other handouts on VISTA. So if you don’t know how to manage Vista well or need to brush up your basic skills, please attend.

Anyone in the department who wants to come is welcome. Get your new year and new semester off on a digital fast track!

Shakespeare’s 446th Birthday Celebration!

On Thursday, April 22, 2010 at the Legacy Gazebo, Dr. Keith Botelho of the English Department at Kennesaw State University will host KSU’s 4^th Annual Shakespeare Birthday Celebration. KSU students, alumni, faculty, staff, and administrators, as well as members from the local community, are encouraged to participate in a day-long reading of all of Shakespeare’s 154 sonnets. Throughout the day (from 10am-3pm), we will read aloud the sonnets in order according to a prearranged schedule:

10:00 Welcome Remarks, Dr. Keith Botelho

10:00-11:00am—Sonnets 1-40

11:00-12:00pm—Sonnets 41-80

12:00-1:00—Cake Cutting, Performances by actors from Atlanta’s own Shakespeare Tavern, Trivia and Giveaways and More!

Internship: Composition Rhetoric

ASSEMBLY MUSIC GROUP (ASMBLY), a premier entertainment company and record label specializing in artist development, is seeking a curriculum writer for an upcoming project slated to begin in the fall of 2010. The candidate would join a team of writers to draft curriculum content for a newly developed vocational program for high school students. This opportunity could work well as an internship or a capstone project due to the depth of writing involved.

Program Highlights:

TooL BoX is a 4-Year Vocational Program created by Assembly Music Group, Inc. and National Society of Soul, Inc. to allow high school students to gain hands-on experience within the Arts & Entertainment Industry. This program specifically focuses on the 3 main elements of the Entertainment Industry: Fashion, Art, and Music.

These 3 elements have been sub-divided into 4-year vocational tracks that will allow high students to receive certification along with their high school diploma to either further their develop skills by attending post-secondary schools that specialize in the arts or jump-start their career within the Arts & Entertainment industry. The vocational tracks that are currently being offered are listed below:

1. Fashion Design/Merchandising

2. Music Production and Composition

3. Sound Recording

4. Vocal Performance

5. Cosmetology

6. Art and Graphic Design

TooL BoX was created for students who aspire to build a lifetime career within the Arts & Entertainment Industry. Often times, traditional college preparatory curricula does not allow artistic students to fully develop their skills and/or prepare them appropriately to be accepted into the various specialized post-secondary schools. Therefore, this program was created to initiate artistic preparation for students in grades 9th-12th, and to teach them step-by-step how to develop and hone their skills to perfection.

Each vocational track teaches the students not only the basic skills, but also the history of their particular talent. It’s like they say, “You can’t know where you’re going until you know where you came from”. Throughout Years 1-3 the students will utilize industry-standard equipment, technology, and methods of operations.

In the 4th year (12th Grade) of each curriculum, the students enter an apprenticeship program. This apprenticeship program allows them to gain hands-on experience to assist them in applying their classroom knowledge into the “Real World”.

Internship: Copy Editor for Target Audience Magazine

Gain experience in media by working as an intern for Target Audience Magazine. This is an online magazine with national exposure. Main duties will involve copy editing issues of the quarterly magazine for spelling, formatting, fact-checking and layout/design. We use Adobe Indesign and Photoshop, but intern does not need to have this program at home.

In addition, selected candidate will have an opportunity to gain experience in marketing, social networking, ad sales, graphic design, and other aspects of running a magazine if so desired and time-permitting.

Additional projects may involve writing reviews for live shows, taking pictures and reviewing cds, books, movies and more. For these aspects, proficiency with photography is a must.

This is an intern at home opportunity, but the business home office is available for up to 3 hours weekly for one-on-one traiing and observation.

QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED:
Copy-editing skills, desire to learn or knowledge of Adobe Indesign, Photoshop, working knowledge of grammar and writing skills.

10-19 hours per week desired, all semesters.

Writing Your First Novel: Reading & Workshop

Jeffrey Stepakoff will read from his acclaimed new novel, FIREWORKS OVER
TOCCOA, this Saturday, April 10 in the Leadership Room of the Carmichael
Student Center from 12 noon- 12:30. The reading is FREE and open to the
public. A booksigning will follow.

He will teach a workshop, Writing Your First Novel, from 12:30 – 2 PM
right after. The cost of the workshop is $10 for Georgia Writers Association
members and KSU students with a KSU ID, and $20 for the general public. For
